California EDD unemployment benefits provide temporary income to eligible workers who lose a job or have their hours reduced. The Employment Development Department (EDD) uses myEDD as the account gateway and UI Online as the workspace for unemployment claims.
myEDD and UI Online have different roles
A myEDD account is the sign-in point for EDD online services. After signing in, a claimant selects UI Online to apply, manage an existing claim, certify for benefits, view claim and payment status, and respond to available tasks.
EDD’s unemployment quick-links page also routes users to reopening, wage reporting, appeals, payment options, overpayments, forms, and fraud resources. For a broader benefits overview, see California unemployment benefits.
Applying starts the claim but does not guarantee payment
EDD asks about identity, work authorization where applicable, wage history, job separation, and the ability and availability to work. The fastest application method is myEDD, while phone, fax, and mail options remain available.
A claim can be filed even when eligibility is uncertain, including after a quit, discharge, or possible employee misclassification. EDD reviews the facts and may request a questionnaire or interview before deciding an issue.
California eligibility applies week by week
California Unemployment Insurance Code section 1253 requires a claim for the week, work registration as directed, ability and availability for work, a one-week waiting period, a suitable-work search under EDD instructions, and required reemployment activities.
EDD’s current guidance likewise says a claimant must be fully or partially unemployed, unemployed through no fault of their own, physically able and available, looking for work, and ready to accept work. These requirements continue after the initial application.
General eligibility concepts are compared in how to qualify for unemployment.
Certifying every two weeks requests payment
EDD requires claimants to certify every two weeks, with answers covering eligibility for each week. Certification includes information about ability and availability, work search, school or training, work performed, and wages earned.
Online certification through myEDD and UI Online is the fastest route. EDD warns that incorrect or missed answers can delay a claim, so the review screen should be checked before submission.
The waiting week and benefit amount are separate
The first otherwise eligible week is generally an unpaid waiting week under section 1253. A claimant must still certify for that week and satisfy the weekly conditions.
EDD currently lists weekly benefit amounts from $40 to $450, based on prior wages. The award notice and UI Online claim summary show claim-specific figures, and an estimate does not itself establish eligibility.
Monitor notices, status, and the benefit-year end
Claimants should read EDD emails and mailed notices because identity, separation, wage, or weekly eligibility issues may require a response. UI Online provides claim and payment status, and EDD added secure personalized chatbot updates for claim status, payment details, and eligibility information in 2026.
A benefit year ends 12 months after the claim start date. Benefits cannot be paid for weeks after that date, even if a balance remains; a new claim requires enough recent wages and continuing unemployment or part-time work.
California law governs the state claim
Unemployment insurance operates in a federal-state framework, but California statutes and EDD procedures control the ordinary California claim described here. Claimants should use official EDD pages rather than unofficial login links or messages requesting credentials.
