The Motion Picture Association and ByteDance announced a global framework for copyright safeguards around ByteDance’s AI video and image models. What the framework covers
The parties described the arrangement as a memorandum of understanding, commonly called an MOU. It covers Seedance and Seedream models offered through TikTok, the TikTok USDS Joint Venture, CapCut, Dreamina and other products.
Seedance generates video, while Seedream generates images. The announced goal is to maintain guardrails that protect intellectual property as those models and their uses change.
Both sides said newer Seedance 2.5 and Seedream 5.0 Pro releases reflected advances in intellectual-property protections. They also said their collaboration would continue across products and markets worldwide.
The dispute behind the agreement
The MOU followed months of discussions prompted by the MPA’s February cease-and-desist letter. The association had alleged that Seedance 2.0 used copyrighted works without authorization and lacked meaningful safeguards.
Those assertions were the MPA’s allegations, not findings by a court or government agency. The Associated Press reported in February that ByteDance said it respects intellectual-property rights and was strengthening safeguards against unauthorized use by users.
The MPA now says ByteDance implemented new guardrails after receiving its feedback. The association also says it continues monitoring for alleged infringement, showing that the framework is an ongoing process.

The parties said they will keep working together as the technology evolves. The announcement does not reveal whether users will see prompts or outputs blocked, filtered or otherwise restricted.
